Music & Language

30 Oct 2026

Can the first lessons in music also awaken a love of language, nature and human values? Brhaddhvani introduces the first part of the series “Music & Language”. We are happy to present “Tamizhin Isai – Sarali Varisai", bringing together the foundational exercises of the Karaikudi vina tradition and the lyrical Tamil poetry of Kavignar S. Vaidheeswaran.

Developed in the 90s through Karaikudi S. Subramanian’s COMET programme (Correlated Objective Music Education and Training), this approach connects pitch, rhythm and melodic expression with the sounds and meanings of words. Children and learners of all ages are invited to discover how poetry can enliven musical practice and how singing can enrich instrumental expression from the very beginning.

Drawing on nine generations of vina heritage, this endeavour begins with Tamil, with other Indian languages to follow. It invites learners everywhere to explore the connections between music and language, opening pathways to learning across cultures and creating love of languages.

The first set of exercises are now available to all learners on Patantara.com. These learning resources are offered free of charge to all learners. If you would like to support Brhaddhvani and its continued efforts to make music education accessible, we welcome your contributions.

“A tradition truly lives when what we inherit becomes a source of learning and discovery for the generations that follow.”
